Shorin Ryu Karatedo

At CPWD we study Shorin Ryu Karate as taught by O'Sensei Eizo Shimabukuro of Ginoza, Okinawa. O'Sensei holds the rank of 10th dan and is the Chairman of the Okinawan branch of the All Japan Karatedo League. O'Sensei is dedicated to preserving Okinawan Shorin-Ryu in its truest form. In his youth, he studied with Master Chotoku Kyan, Chosin Chibana, Chojun Miyagi, Choki Motobu, as well as his older brother, Tatsuo Shimabukuro. He has been teaching karate since 1948.

Okinawa is the birthplace of karate. From these islands south of mainland Japan, karate spread first to Japan, then to other areas of Asia and then around the world. Karate developed as a combination of the indigenous Okinawan martial art of ti and the martial arts of China, as the trade between the two countries thrived for centuries. There were three main styles of karate that developed in three Okinawan cities: Naha, Shuri, and Tomari. Naha-te developed into Goju Ryu. Shuri-te and Tomari-te developed into Shorin Ryu. Grandmaster Shimabukuro teaches both Shorin Ryu kata and Goju Ryu kata.
